Mandar Kolapkar though fought extremely well could not win his bout in A-40 (1996 born) weight class. Harshal Birmule (Fly Weight) won his bouts till finals in very impressive manner but lost in finals with experienced BEG Boy on points and settled with Silver Medal.

Nadeem Pathan (Feather Weight) another hope for the Thane district and Maharashtra Military School settled with Bronze Medal while facing his tall opponent in odd manner. While absorbing this shock to the Team Thane we saw sudden rise of Manthan Rathod (Middle Weight) from Vasai to reach up to finals and wins Silver Medal.

Team Coach who worked hard through out about a months training camp on these Boxers was not happy as as per him Boxers especially Harshal Birmule and Nadeem Pathan did not perform to their fullest of potential. But he was satisfied with new find from Vasai, Manthan Rathod in Middle Weight. Team Manager Mr. Rohit managed all function very well in his first ever State Tour.

VASANT VIHAR: The Vasant Vihar Sport’s Club inaugurated a boxing wing for women on International Women’s Day. “There are lady boxers from Thane
district level who are medal winners at the state, as well as the national level, but they need more avenues to practice here close to home and save time,” says Gauri Vaidya.

One aspiring boxer is Kanchan Thakur, who took to boxing because it was different from the normal sports for girls. In her career, Kanchan has won four gold medals, six silver medals and two bronze medals at the state level. She has also won a silver medal at the national level.

Like Kanchan Thakur. Mansi Thakur won a silver medal at the national level in the pin weight category for those under 14

Thane’s women’s boxing team also has Geeta Gandhi, who has won four gold medals and four silver medals, while Komal Wadke has won a gold, four silver medals and two bronze medals in the state-level

Kanchan Thakur is happy that this has started in Thane as more girls will join. “Indian girls have been winning medals in boxing at the international level and even in the last world championships, the Indian Women’s Team won the team championship,” she says.

Interestingly, MC Mary Kom from Manipur has won the gold medal at the world women’s boxing championships for the past three consecutive world women’s boxing championships in a row.

What gave a fillip to the thought process to set up this training centre at Thane was the fact that many girls used to come and watch the men practice. This interest shown by the girls was the main motivating factor in mobilizing forces to begin setting up early so as to inaugurate on Women’s Day

Our boxers’ show in the Beijing Olympics has been the punch in the right direction for all of us to notice that cricket isn’t the only game having a following in India. Now, with the success of our boxers, Thane boxers, who have won several state and national-level tournaments, will hopefully have a better future ahead, feels

The dazzling display of our boxers in the Beijing Olympics has infused new life in the boxing fraternity of India and Thane boxers are also now breathing fire as there is hope that they can represent India on the world stage.
Unlike aspiring wrestlers who would look up to Dara Singh and cricketers who have a number of players to look up to, aspiring boxers have never had icons to motivate them. Now, however, men’s 75 kg middleweight boxer
Vijayendra Kumar whose boxing skills wowed everyone in the Beijing Olympics could become an icon after his showing in the current Olympics.

In 2004-5 in the inter-collegiate boxing championships, Thane boys participated in every weight category. And boxers like Sagar Pednekar, Ravindra Desai and Bhupesh Kamble winning a number of medals between them in state as well as national-level, Thane boxers have shown that they are good enough to compete with the best in the country and perhaps the world too.

The Thane district amateur boxing was set up in 1993 to facilitate the boxers from Thane, who has produced not only university and state champions but today boast of a maximum number of ring officials in the state, many of whom hold important offices in the administration of the State body.

Maharashtra Amateur Boxing Association, (MABA) as a state body has the affiliation of 23 districts. The Thane District Amateur Boxing Association (TDABA), established in 1993, as its most active unit. It has worked hard on all fronts to promote boxing.

“Nothing succeeds like success,” asserts Gauri Vaidya, chairperson, Women Commission, MABA, National R/J.
One of the first women members of ring official commission in the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, Vaidya adds, “Industries and institutions should wake up and take an interest in promoting boxing in India. It was cricket and nothing but cricket all the way but this showing of Indian boxers in the Beijing Olympics should open the eyes of businessmen that boxing if nurtured can prove results on a world stage.”

With the show of our boxers on the international stage and despite the fact that they didn’t reach the finals, the boxers’ performance can bring in a lot of funding for the sport. Developing the infrastructure will only ensure better results in the future
